Le voyage du Solex 1700 de
Houilles (Région Parisienne) à
San Luis Obispo (Californie)

I was bitten by the Solex bug at a young age; at 14 it was the only motor vehicle I was able to get. I would have preferred a moped, more powerful and faster, but one month of a summer job was enough to be able to acquire my first Solex, a 2200. After two years the machine was destroyed as a result of wild races and other silliness. It wasn’t until 1988 that the Solex came out of the cellar of oblivion in my heart. When production stopped I realized how much I missed the “bicycle which runs by itself”. The next week I ran an ad and bought my first 3800. I restored it, and a friend gave me second 3800, and my collection was started. I met a member of a Solex club and then I was hooked.
For 20 years now I've been collecting everything that has to do with the VeloSolex, and I ride it every day - what a pleasure! For me this magic machine not only brings back the flavor of the ‘60's and ‘70's along with a certain carefree feeling, but it also brings encounters with other enthusiasts who invite me to share the sweet speed of a VeloSolex, its mechanical problems, and many other things. Another thing that gives me a great deal of pleasure is to bring a rusty hulk back to life or to chase after a rare part.
Now begins the story of the historic exchange with my friend Charles de Vogel, a great aficionado of the VeloSolex and a purist among purists. We first met at the rally in Beauvais. He represents the VeloSolex with gusto in the United States. We’ve done several intercontinental exchanges, which have allowed me to appreciate Charles’ great qualities.
At the rally in Oosterbeek in 2008, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Dutch Solex, my friend and colleague Jean-Claude Toudy, one of the main French collectors, showed me his newest acquisition, a superb 4600, the American version of this machine.
Having only seen photos of it of up until then, I find it very original; I like everything about it, its Palma yellow color gives it an exotic feeling; the oversize head- and taillights, the superfluous controls, in short, in my opinion it’s the most sophisticated of all the Solexes. It seems that it would be very difficult to get a 4600 someday. But suddenly, a nudge from Destiny! In one of his e-mails, Charles wrote: “I just acquired a 4600 in good condition, but I’d happily trade it for a 1700 in good, original condition”. Frankly, I thought he was joking, but I allowed myself to propose a deal. His positive response delighted me!
Next we set hurriedly about dismantling the bikes, packaging and shipping them. We had to wait a week before unpacking our precious presents. Today when I ride my 4600 in town I often have a thought for Charles… I imagine him on his Solex 1700 in a beautiful California setting, and I would be happy to give him a tour of Paris on a VeloSolex, (perhaps a 1700, or why not a 4600?).
