1- About Ferrière-la-Petite (F) and Potters of Bouffioulx (B).
This small border town was chosen for several reasons: the space it provides for this kind of event, the kindness and collaboration of the municipal councilors and of course the history that closely links the city to the town of Bouffioulx in Belgium near Charleroi.
Indeed, the technique of salt glazing was imported to Ferrière-la-Petite in 1718 by Bouffioulx native Gilles Gibon. This village of Avesnois lived at the time of the pottery for more than two centuries. In Ferrière, there remains a round oven with a reversed flame of 30 m3 which has ceased its activities and of which only two copies remain in France for the firing of blue or brown salted sandstones.
In Bouffioulx, there is a square oven with reversed flame fed by 4 coal fireplaces that run every year at St Etienne (December 26).
If you visit the museum, you will learn more about these techniques.
